Have just found out that the veg is half priced at Lidl. Have never tried pickling before so it's time to experiment without a big hole in the pocket if it all goes pear-shaped!

Good time of year for you to try it too, being the holidays and all. Good luck!

It`s cheap all year round! I always shop at Lidl first - I`d have great difficulty spending more than £ 20.00, I can take some German delights like potato salad and then move on to Tesco to get what Lidl hasn`t got... I am so glad to have a Lidl here (and Aldi right next door...)

I can only agree. When I lived in Bayern we did roughly half our shopping at Norma (which could have been Aldi or Lidl) and the rest at MiniMal or Tengelmann. For British readers MiniMal is roughly like say Somerfield and Tengelmann like Waitrose.
Aldi started in the UK (cleverly) in a few towns with military bases where the personnel would be familiar with German supermarkets; but somehow lacked the vision to capitalise on this. Lidl did the same (opening for example in Tidworth, Wiltshire, near a big army base a few years before doing so in larger towns). They would have tapped a market reasonably familiar with German products. I am astonished how fast they have expanded in the last 5 years not just in the UK but also Spain and France.
They have excellent value for money in some products (German ones e.g. Bratwürste, Schwartzwalderschinken or Italian e.g. passata or mozzarella cheese or olive oil). Some things are very varied. As my father in rural Scotland admits there is sometimes very good local fruit and veg...but sometimes some pretty awful stuff on the verge of going off.
However the end result is very positive...much more choice for us as consumers!

Yeah, it`s worth finding out when they get their delivery in, as they "fresh" produce can be tatty if you shop on a bad day. I have taken stuff back in the past and received refunds.
It may be even worse in remote areas...
